Description

Over the last several years, the Republic of Haiti has increasingly been featured in news reports and sadly for the people of Haiti, the reasons for this have not been positive. Natural disasters, disease, and political turmoil are usually what puts Haiti on the pages of American media outlets, and all three of these have been a recurring theme over the last two years. Hopes for greater stability in Haiti as the global pandemic waned were dashed, as the already building political controversy of Jovenel Moise’s presidency culminated in his assassination on 7 July 2021. Since that time, Haiti has experienced yet another earthquake, hurricanes, and a deepening political crisis in which Haitian political authority has been usurped by an ever-growing number of street gangs exercising greater control over the capital than the Haitian government.
