Description

A System Dynamic (SD) model is used to examine the dynamics of an informal artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) supply chain in Madre de Dios (MdD). A reported gap of about 15% of the gold exports in Peru going unreported prompted this model which was tested under a flood scenario, one of the main impacts that affects illegal mercury supply, fuel supply, and availability of workers. The explicit analysis of the ASGM supply chain allows for the quantification of gold production under different external environments impacting mining. The study noted that while there is a 30-50% decrease in gold production due to climate change effects in the wet season, production almost never stops as the system recovers a few days after the external disruption ends.
