Description
There were no significant changesin the human rights situation in Jamaica during the year. Significant human rightsissues included credible reports of: arbitrary or unlawful killings, including extrajudicial killings; cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment by the government; harsh and life threatening conditions in prisons and detention facilities; arbitrary arrest or detention; serious government corruption; extensive gender-based violence; substantial barriers to reproductive health services; laws criminalizing consensual samesex sexual conduct between adults, although the government did not enforce the law during the year; and crimes involving violence targeting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or intersex persons. The government did not take credible steps to identify and punish officials who may have committed human rights abuses.
