Description

This report, published by the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), sheds light on the use of sexual violence by armed gangs in Haiti. The report reveals that gangs employ sexual violence, including collective rapes, to instill fear, punish, and expand their areas of influence. The victims include women, girls, boys, and occasionally men, who suffer from ruthless sexual crimes, often in front of their families. Impunity for these acts is widespread, exacerbated by the inadequacy of the healthcare system to provide proper treatment for survivors. Access to mental health care is also limited, leading to long-lasting trauma. In light of this dire situation, the report offers key recommendations to national authorities, service providers, and international actors to address and combat gang-related sexual violence in Haiti.
