Description

This strategy report highlights how multiple political, public health, and law enforcement challenges have created challenges for global drug control. Statistics conveyed that drug overdoses in the United States reached record highs. These aforementioned highs in 2021 can be attributed to the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on U.S. efforts to curb drug trafficking as trafficking routes were altered. The failure of countries such as Bolivia and Venezuela to uphold their obligrations under international drug control agreements also presented a problem that further spurred challenges to global drug control in 2021. Other elements such as the global presence that Mexican criminal organizations hold, Mexico as a major transit country for concaine from South America to the U.S., and how altering political landscapes may be leading to further drug control challenges are also addressed.
