Description

This study aims to analyze the current status and socioenvironmental impacts of artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM), specifically in the Cascales canton in the province of Sucumbios in the northeastern Ecuador. Recently, this activity has been said to bring about too many socioenvironmental risks, including producing direct and indirect impacts on the nearby populations. These conflicts can be generated by the use or contamination of resources like water, land, air, etc., as well as the displacement of populations or use of specially significant areas to the population. Through bibliographic reviews and expert reviews, the management and impacts of ASGM were analyzed. The main issues noted lie in a lack of control of mining activities by local, regional, and national government authorities. It becomes necessary to implement policies that involve regulatory, institutional fiscal and strategic planning, management and the management of socioenvironmental conflicts. Proposing solutions to the social and environmental problems of Ecuador requires the commitment of the government, NGOs, private associations, universities and research institutions in alliance to be in favour of sustainable and responsible artisanal and small-scale mining.
