Michaela A. Carr A thinking school's journey to accreditation: a South African teacher's perspective

Abstract:

The round-table discussion aims to share my journey as a teacher in a school that has been accredited as a Thinking School after a 5-year period of implementing Habits of Mind, Thinking hats and Thinking Maps.

Slides will be used to show both best practice and challenges faced in the classroom. Participants will be invtied to commment and question the pros and cons of the journey.

The school is multicultural and many students' home language is not English. The Thinking Skills' programme empowers students to improve thsir academic language and in developing the growth mindset necessary for the world of work.

Abstract:

Our goal in this round table is to help initiate meaningful conversations with educators about the challenges of acknowledging various identities in the classroom in order to support students' growth as ethically minded, global citizens.


Oneyda Paneque Teacher Certification Exams: Where are we now?

Abstract:

This roundtable discussion will examine issues related to teacher certification exams. A brief overview of the exams will be presented. Data on passing rates and the correlation between the exams and teacher effectiveness will also be discussed. Given the need to prepare K-12 students with 21st century skills of collaboration and teamwork; creativity and imagination; critical thinking, and problem solving, do these exams help teachers achieve these goals?
