Document Guidelines

Criteria for Submission

  • Relevance: Work must relate to the scope of Athenaeum and be authored or co-authored by FIU Libraries faculty or staff.
  • Original or Previously Presented: Submissions may be:
    • Unpublished or unpresented work (e.g., research articles, whitepapers, blog posts, etc.).
    • Previously peer-reviewed work (e.g., conference posters, presentations) where the author retains rights to share the content.
  • English Abstract: Required for all submissions, including those in other languages.

Abstract Requirements

  • Length: Up to 500 words.
  • Format: Submit as a .docx file.
  • Language: English (even if the main submission is in another language).
  • Content:
    • Summarize the topic, methodology (if applicable), and findings.
    • Explain relevance to library professionals or information science.
    • If previously presented or published, include original venue (e.g., conference name, date) and any updates or clarifications.

  • Title
  • Abstract (up to 500 words)
  • Keywords
  • Short author biography (2–3 sentences)
  • Main submission file

Accepted Formats

  • Papers and Reports: PDF preferred; Word (.docx) also accepted.
  • Conference Presentations and Posters: Upload as PDF or PowerPoint. Include a 500-word abstract file.
  • Multimedia Projects: Submit audio/video separately in accessible formats (e.g., MP4). No embedded media in main file.
  • Digital Exhibits: Submit as a stable URL or HTML file. Include a zipped archive of exhibit files if needed.
  • Datasets: Submit separately for hosting in FIU’s data repository.

Formatting Requirements

  • Use 1-inch margins on all sides.
  • Font: Times New Roman or similar; 12 pt for main text, 10 pt for footnotes.
  • Single-spacing; left-justified text.
  • Do not include a title page, page numbers, headers, or footers.
  • Figures and tables should be high-resolution and placed near their references in the text.
  • Footnotes may be used for brief explanations; references must follow APA (7th ed.) in-text citation style.

Citation & Style

  • Citations: APA, 7th edition.
  • Footnotes: Allowed for short explanatory notes only. Do not use endnotes.
  • General Layout: Follow Chicago Manual of Style conventions for headings and figures in unpublished work.

Rights & Licensing

  • Authors retain copyright to their work.
  • Athenaeum is granted a non-exclusive license to publish and archive the work online.
  • Authors may share their work on personal or institutional sites, subject to any copyright restrictions.
  • Works should be accompanied by a Creative Commons license if authors wish to encourage reuse. Attribution is required for reuse.
