Style Guide

This document outlines formatting and submission requirements for final manuscripts submitted to Athenaeum: Scholarly Works of the FIU Libraries Faculty and Staff.

Formatting Requirements

Authors must include an abstract (up to 300 words) with their submission.

Do not include page numbers, headers, or footers.

Manuscript must be written in English.

Submit the entire manuscript—including tables, figures, and appendices—as a single file (.docx or .pdf).

Use an 8.5 x 11-inch page size.

All margins (top, bottom, left, right) must be 1 inch.

Use single spacing and left-justified text.

Use a single-column layout.

Fonts

Main body: 12-point font, Times New Roman font is recommended. Other serif and sans-serif fonts, also allowed by the APA Manual 7th edition, are acceptable.

Footnotes: 10-point Times or other serif and sans-serif fonts, also allowed by the APA Manual 7th edition. Consistency with the main body font type is strongly advised.

Additional Recommendations

Indent all paragraphs except those following a section heading (minimum 2 em-spaces).

Do not insert extra space between paragraphs (except for long quotes or special remarks).

Avoid widowed/orphaned text at page breaks.

Use italics—not underlining—for emphasis.

Set the font color to black for all text. Avoid colors unless essential to figures or illustrations.

Use Times or a similar font. For headings, a sans-serif font (e.g., Arial) is acceptable.

All headings should be consistent in style and indicate hierarchy through size or formatting (e.g., small caps).

Language and Grammar

All submissions must be in English. Foreign terms should be italicized. Authors must follow standard English grammar.

Article Length

There are no strict page limits. However, authors are asked to be concise and avoid unnecessary length.

Footnotes

Footnotes should appear at the bottom of the page, not at the end of the document.

Use 10-point Times font, single-spaced, with a footnote separator line.

Footnote numbers follow punctuation.

Excessively long footnotes should be placed in an appendix.

Tables and Figures

Place tables/figures near their first mention in the text.

Large figures may be on their own page.

All must fit within the 1-inch margins (portrait or landscape).

Figures should be high resolution. Do not embed separate files.

Mathematics

Italicize Roman letters used as variables.

Use inline math for short expressions; use display math for complex or multi-line expressions.

Equations should be numbered consistently and clearly.

Use standard fonts and avoid unusual symbols that may not render properly in PDF.
