Abstract

Nowadays, finding resources to digitize, preserve, and create access to special collections is still a challenge for information managers at libraries, museums, and archives. In 2019, Veronica Gonzalez and Ximena Valdivia, librarians at Florida International University, decided to combine their expertise and knowledge in audio preservation and cataloging to guarantee access to hundreds of songs recorded between 1900 and 1935. They presented a proposal for the Recording at Risk grant; the project awarded facilitated the digitization and metadata creation of audio recordings. These audios were available in cassette tapes and were considered testimonies of Cuban and Latin American society, subjects related to politics, diversity, and economy, among others can be studied through the lyrics. In this presentation, the librarians will provide a quick tour of the journey to complete this project.
