Abstract

The collections at FIU represent the national and cultural regions of Caribbean Basin, Miami and South Florida. Many of these collections contain material in multiple languages. When processing these records in the English language accessibility for non-English speakers becomes a challenge and leads to the under use of these materials. To address this problem archivists have begun to explore providing multilingual description in the Finding Aids. We will discuss how our project decisions align with the FIU Libraries mission and values and its conscious metadata initiative efforts, and how these have guided our work process and descriptive practices.
