Abstract

FIU is collaborating with the Arch Creek Trust to preserve the organization’s archival records reflecting the expansive history and prehistory of Arch Creek, in North Miami, Florida, from its earliest native inhabitants to the present. Trust volunteers are learning to scan their historical papers, photographs and other materials for inclusion in FIU’s dPanther Repository, with the help of equipment loaned by SEFLIN (Southeast Florida Library Information Network), and support from FIU faculty and staff. The volunteers will also contribute to metadata creation to support access to the historical materials in perpetuity.

This presentation will introduce the Arch Creek Trust to the South Florida archival community and its work in preserving the rich natural history and significant archeology of the site. We will discuss major activities involve in the collaboration to guarantee preservation and long-term availability of the collection, as well as lessons learned to foster greater collaboration among FIU and local cultural and historical organizations.
