Description

The number of casualties and degree of damage is likely to increase as more information becomes available (USGS 14/08/2021 a). Around one million people were likely exposed to very strong shaking (level VII and above on the modified Mercalli intensity scale), with over 230,000 people living within 15km from the epicentre (GDACS 14/08/2021; USGS 14/08/2021 b; WFP 14/08/2021). The impact of the earthquake is going to aggravate pre-existing needs and vulnerabilities caused by political instability, recurring violence, food insecurity, and the COVID-19 outbreak. Coping capacities of the affected population are likely to be rapidly decreasing.
