Description
This study therefore focuses on the degree to which harmful fisheries subsidies are contributing to distant water fishing (DWF) including high-seas fishing (HSF). The study combines existing global datasets in order to estimate the extent to which host countries and large marine ecosystems are affected by the largest subsidizing nations, and in doing so maps the spatial distribution of the impact of fisheries subsidies throughout the ocean. The study aims to answer the following research questions: 1. What is the link, if any, between the provision of harmful subsidies and the prevalence of distant-water and high-seas fishing? and; 2. What is the spatial distribution of the impact of harmful subsidies and which parts of the ocean suffer the consequences of the top-ten highest subsidizing countries?
