Description / Descripción

Helen Lewis Dogs and dispositions: how animal-assisted intervention can improve children's views of themselves as learners

Abstract:

In the USA, UK and indeed, around the globe, educational standards remain a concern (eg PISA, 2013). There is increasing recognition of the importance of factors such as children's dispositions and their attitudes towards their own education in the learning process. This paper reports on a study that explored the impact of bringing dogs into classrooms - on pupil attitudes towards reading, on children's views of themselves as learners and on their cognitive outcomes. The findings will be of interest to teachers, parents and the wider community.

Bettina Ingham The impact of the visual arts in patients fighting against cancer and their families

Abstract:

Currently developing a program using the visual arts and the Visual Thinking Strategies as a tool to foster well-being and improve the quality of life of patients suffering from cancer. Works of art have the power to spur observation, critical thinking, emotions and creativity, all of which enable people to see things from different perspectives.

Silvia Lopez Cancer: behind the trepidation of the world.

Cancer is a frightening word that some of us have to face and mindfully determine how it will define us. As a Breast Cancer patient I chose to fight this battle with courage and to continue to live life with passion. As my fear dissipated, I felt the need to share my experience to help other with this condition by creating a foundation for cancer patients. The goal is to use holistic complements to medical therapy and develop thinking strategies to offset the deleterious effects of chemotherapy on neurocognitive function.
