Abstract
Abstract
Problem Background: Electronic health records (EHR) have become integral to healthcare delivery resulting in a significant increase in clinician documentation burden. Up to 50% of provider time is spent on electronic documentation, leaving only 27% for direct patient interaction. These challenges disrupt patient-provider relationships, contribute to provider burnout, and reduce care satisfaction.
Purpose: This quality improvement project aimed to evaluate the impact of implementing an NLP AI scribe tool, Scribematic, on patient-provider interactions and care satisfaction in a pediatric outpatient setting. The study sought to determine whether the tool could improve patient-provider interactions and care satisfaction of pediatric patient parent/guardians as measured by patient-provider interaction, visit satisfaction, care satisfaction, the quality of patient-provider communication, the perceived impact on the length of visits, and the perceived impact on the quality of care provided.
Methodology: Using a quasi-experimental design, 34 participants comprising parents or guardians of pediatric patients were recruited. Participants were divided into control and intervention groups, with the latter exposed to Scribematic during clinical visits. Data was collected using the Pediatric Parent-Provider Interaction and Care Satisfaction (PPPICS) Questionnaire. The results were analyzed using descriptive and non-parametric statistics.
Results: The study found significant improvements in satisfaction levels among participants in the intervention group. Visit satisfaction and total satisfaction scores were statistically significant (p = 0.047 for both measures). The AI scribe tool demonstrated its potential to enhance provider focus on patient care, positively impacting the patient experience and improving patient satisfaction.
Implications for Practice: AI documentation tools like Scribematic present promising solutions to EHR-related challenges, offering cost-effective and scalable alternatives to traditional methods. These tools could enhance efficiency and satisfaction, particularly in high-volume practices. Future research should expand to diverse clinical settings and include provider perspectives to validate findings and optimize the integration of AI tools in healthcare.
