Abstract
In the healthcare industry, operating room delays are a serious problem that affects both patient outcomes and hospital productivity. In order to solve this issue, the goal of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project is to create and apply a pre-operative checklist tailored to registered nurses (RNs) working on the neurosurgical unit. Standardizing pre-operative procedures, reducing mistakes or omissions, and eventually shortening the time it takes for patients to arrive in the operating room (OR) are the objectives of the intervention. A thorough pre-operative checklist designed specifically for neurosurgery patients makes up the intervention. Ten to twenty registered nurses on the unit will get a flyer with a QR code that links to an anonymous pre-survey, the checklist, and a post-survey. The pre-survey aims to evaluate the nurses' pre-operative procedures knowledge, while the post-survey will analyze the information acquired and the checklist's perceived usefulness. To guarantee privacy and usability, the Qualtrics platform will be used to administer both surveys. The primary aim of this project is to optimize pre-operative procedure efficiency by mitigating OR delays, promoting nurse adherence to protocol, and elevating the standard of care for neurosurgical patients. By offering evidence-based data on the effects of standardized pre-operative checklists in a neurosurgery environment, this study will advance nursing knowledge. If implemented successfully, there may be less delays in the OR, better patient outcomes, and even the possibility of serving as a model for other specialties or divisions. The results will be utilized to suggest that the checklist be employed consistently in practice and to look at areas that might require more improvement.
