Abstract

Background: Obstetric patients who elect for spinal anesthesia can assist with pain reduction for their upcoming cesarean section. Patients are informed of the complications of spinal anesthesia from infection, bleeding, patchy spinal block, and post-dural puncture headaches. Patients who opt for spinal anesthesia have a 23% chance of experiencing post-dural puncture headaches. Post-dural puncture headache is a known complication of spinal anesthesia that occurs through an accidental puncture of the dura, excessive cerebral spinal fluid loss leading to reduced pressure, and ventilation. Patients will experience painful headaches, nausea, vomiting, and visual disturbances. The treatment for post-dural puncture headaches varies among providers and organizations, but the constant is the conservative treatment option of bedrest, intravenous fluids, and oral medications. This project aimed to educate providers on the use of Pregabalin, along with conservative treatment, to assist in reducing post-dural puncture headache symptoms.
