Abstract

Title: A Comprehensive Educational Intervention to Improve Home Health Nurses’ Knowledge and Skills Related to Chronic Wound Care

Background: Chronic wounds pose a significant burden on healthcare systems and patients. Effective management of chronic wounds in the home health setting is critical for improving patient outcomes and quality of life. Despite the availability of evidence-based guidelines, many home health nurses lack the necessary training to apply these principles effectively.

Purpose: This quality improvement project aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of home health nurses in chronic wound care management through targeted educational interventions.

Methods: The project was implemented on July 3rd, 2024, at the University of Miami Wound Care Center. A two-hour educational intervention was provided to the University of Miami Home Care team. The intervention included comprehensive training on the assessment, treatment, and prevention of chronic wounds, utilizing evidence-based practices. Pre- and post-intervention assessments were conducted to measure changes in knowledge and confidence levels among the participating nurses.

Results: Preliminary analysis indicates a significant improvement in both the knowledge and confidence of the home health nurses in managing chronic wounds post-intervention. The participants demonstrated enhanced understanding of wound assessment techniques, appropriate use of dressings, and preventive measures. Furthermore, the nurses reported increased confidence in applying these practices in their daily patient care routines.

Conclusion: The educational intervention successfully improved the competency of home health nurses in chronic wound care management. These findings suggest that targeted educational programs can effectively bridge knowledge gaps and enhance the quality of care provided to patients with chronic wounds. Continued support and periodic training are recommended to sustain these improvements and ensure ongoing professional development.
