Assessment of Selected Geographic Information Science (GIScience) Journals: Trends and Ranking Across Metrics
Start Date

Presentation Summary
In this presentation, I'll share insights from my research, recently published in the International Journal of Geographical Information Science, which analyzes publication trends in GIScience journals. I examined data from 2018 to 2023, focusing on open access, author representation, and journal metrics. My findings highlight the growing prevalence of open access and the need to address global representation disparities. I'll present these results and, importantly, provide updated data reflecting the most current publishing patterns. This work offers a critical overview of the evolving GIScience literature, aiming to inform researchers and practitioners alike.
Presenters Bio
Levente earned his PhD degree with a Geomatics focus from the University of Florida. He also holds an MSc in Geography from the University of Szeged, Hungary. Previously, he was a visiting scientist at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Ispra, Italy, and at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences in Villach, Austria. He also served as a data scientist for a geospatial startup, Mapillary. Levente’s research is mainly concerned with data quality of user-generated content, understanding user behavior in online communities, and spatial analysis of social media and other online platforms. His innovative research on location-based games, geospatial web and environmental data science has been featured on numerous outlets, including Bloomberg, GIS Lounge, Tech Insider as well as in international outlets.
He has been working at FIU since 2019. He served as the Interim Director of the GIS Center between 2022 – 2023 overseeing all aspects of the Center, including strategic planning, operations, projects, research and service. Since 2023, he is the Assistant Director of GIScience responsible for the Center’s original research portfolio. In this role, he consults and advises and helps faculty with geospatial research across a range of disciplines, including public health, medicine, biology/ecology, earth sciences and some of the social sciences.
He is a courtesy faculty member at the Department of Earth & Environment where he teaches Environmental GIS in the Professional Masters in Environmental Science & Policy Program. He also teaches Introduction to Data Science in the MS in Data Science & Artificial Intelligence program at FIU’s Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences. He has been recently promoted to Research Associate Professor, effective Fall 2025.
