Presentation Summary

Based on the findings of a pilot study conducted in April 2024, this session invites attendees to explore the communication dynamics between librarians and first-generation college students. The pilot study looks at first-generation college students' information-seeking patterns, interactions with librarians, and perceptions of how libraries communicate with their users. Attendees will contribute to enhancing support and inclusivity within library services by understanding communication preferences, challenges, and effective strategies. During the presentation, we will discuss the implications for effectively serving the needs of first-generation college students within the academic library learning environment.

Presenters Bio

Sabine Jean Dantus is an outreach and reference librarian at the Florida International University Libraries in Miami, Florida. Sabine has a B.S. in communication from Florida International University. She also has an M.S. in mass media and journalism and a M.S. in library science from Pennsylvania Western University, Clarion. Her expertise and interests lie in empathy-based marketing, outreach, user experience, instruction, adult distance education, and library communication. Sabine will complete her doctoral degree in instructional technology and distance education in the summer of 2024. She is researching enhancing communication between librarians and first-generation college students in online, hybrid, and in-person learning settings. Sabine shares her thoughts on empathy, marketing, outreach, books, instruction, librarianship, and her doctoral journey on The Empathic Librarian.
