Publishing Process

Who Can Submit?

The Millennium is aimed by and large at graduate student publication, though submissions are open to exceptional research papers produced by FIU undergraduate students majoring or minoring in History. Consequently, while we envision opening our call for submissions to all students at FIU in the future, for the first edition (to be published Spring 2025), we will be accepting only the following types of submissions:

  1. Papers written by FIU undergraduate students pursuing a major or a minor in History for History senior seminar courses OR
  2. Submissions of any kind by FIU graduate students enrolled in a degree in the Department of History, either exclusively or as part of an interdisciplinary certificate with other departments.

General Submission Rules

Submitted works cannot have been previously published, nor be forthcoming in another journal or book (print or electronic). In addition, by submitting material to The Millennium, the author is attesting that the material is not currently under review at another journal (electronic or print) and that they will not submit the material to another journal (electronic or print) until the completion of the editorial decision process at The Millennium.

For questions or concerns about the submission rules, please contact The Millennium by following the instructions on the “Contact Us” tab. If authors would like to re-publish their submission after it has been published in The Millennium, we ask that The Millennium be acknowledged in any such subsequent publication, according to the following example: "A previous version of this article was previously published in Volume 1 of The Millennium (2025)."

Initial Submission Formatting Requirements

  • Please submit as polished a draft of your submission as possible. While there will be chances to revise your submission if it were to be accepted for publication, this will reduce the review time for all parties involved.
  • Please note that additional formatting requirements might be suggested upon final submission.
  • Please, include a title for your submission
  • Please include an abstract at the beginning of the submission (max. 300 words)
  • Do not include page numbers, headers, or footers. These will be added by the editors.
  • Please submit all parts of the work, including tables, figures, appendices, etc., as a single file (Word, RTF, or PDF files are accepted).
  • Page size should be 8.5 x 11-inches.
  • All margins should be 1.5 inches.
  • Double space your text.
  • Font:
  • Main Body—12 pt. Times New Roman
  • Footnotes—10 pt. Times New Roman
  • If figures are included, use high-resolution figures.
  • Copyedit your manuscript.
  • Please, follow the Chicago Manual Style 17th Edition format for citations and include both footnotes and a bibliography with your submission

Author Responsibilities

We accept submissions that are partially or entirely in languages other than English. However, please note that any potentially necessary translations of a given submission or sections of it will be the responsibility of its author. While The Millennium team might be able to advise authors on language and translation, the ultimate responsibility for the accuracy of grammar and/or translation into/from other languages will be the author’s.

We will also not offer source checking services. The author will need to ensure that the sources are accurately referenced in the footnotes and listed in the bibliography.

Additionally, for multimedia submissions (i.e. artwork, videos, etc.), the author will need to ensure that the submission is a final product. We will not offer media editing services.

Academic Integrity Policies

By submitting to The Millennium, authors affirm that the content therein is their own and that any ideas, topics, or contributions are their own unless stated within the body of work and cited properly. Plagiarism within submissions will not be tolerated and, if found to be present, the author will be duly notified, and the work will be removed from consideration for publication. Plagiarism is defined within FIU’s Student Conduct and Honor Code as:

The submission of any work authored by another person or generated by an automated tool without proper acknowledgement of the source, whether that material is paraphrased or copied in verbatim or near-verbatim form.

Assisting another Student in the submission of any work authored by another person or generated by an automated tool without proper acknowledgement of the source, whether that material is paraphrased or copied in verbatim or near-verbatim form.

As The Millennium is a journal run by and for students, any author, presumed to be an FIU student, will be held to the definition of Plagiarism as set forth in the Student Conduct and Honor Code, and may be subject to the processes included in that Code, including but not limited to Investigation, Pre-Adjudication, Hearings, and Resolutions. Please see FIU’s Student Conduct and Honor Code here for more information.
