Description / Descripción
In The Courage to Teach, Parker Palmer makes the case that “we teach who we are.” Adults play a significant role in helping youth learn to self-regulate and so the condition of our nervous system as we interact with youth is worthy of attention. Developing mindfulness practices that cultivate our own presence, awareness and emotional regulation is an intervention for our students as we provide them a stable anchor and model and supports our ability to respond to dysregulation in our learning environment in more compassionate ways. Beyond cultivating our own practice and embodying mindfulness in our teaching, offering students practices and strategies that build their mindfulness and attention muscles equips them with skills for self- regulation, increased focus, compassion and connectedness. Participants will explore mindfulness approaches for personal and classroom practice. Liane will share experiences and impact from work implementing mindfulness with educators and students in regular and alternative settings.
This presentation is also informed by the work of the Thinking Collaborative. As an Agency Trainer for Cognitive Coaching, Liane has developed the skills of presence and awareness in order to build trust and rapport with those whom she supports. A personal mindfulness practice has been essential in the development of these skills, allowing for a raised level of consciousness and an examination of thought patterns that were previously barriers to growth.
