Arthur J. N. Scavella The Relationship Between District Concert Band Music Performance Assessment Participation and Student Achievement in Miami-Dade County Public Middle Schools

Abstract:

This study investigated the relationship between band participation and student achievement in Miami-Dade County Public Middle Schools. In Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, music is one of the intelligences that is mentioned and his theory is taught in pedagogical courses throughout postsecondary institutions. His theory suggests that music runs in a structural parallel to linguistic and mathematical thought processes; linguistics and mathematics are also constantly assessed on standardized testing. Gardner’s theory also suggests that people possess up to nine intelligences and educators are responsible for tapping into these intelligences to best educate ALL students.

Ashlie Latiolais Hyper-Awareness: Cultivating Citizenship Through Transdisciplinary Thinking

Abstract:

Interdisciplinary approaches and exchange can be viewed as derailing to a lineage of thought, however, it’s that very disruption or contrast in a process that in turn, is the solution. The interdisciplinary exploration, and “both-and” mindset, illustrated in this research aims to emerge innovative perspectives rooted in collaborative ideation between the realms of Dance and Architecture. It discusses the position of Architects acquiring ‘hyper-awareness’ as a result of this transdisciplinary thinking to inform design decisions in regards to the built environment and act more specifically as ‘Choreographers’ and Citizen Architects.

Amnon Karmon Education for Meaning: Outline of a Comprehensive Educational Concept for a Global World

Abstract:

I am submitting herewith a research proposal for an original theoretical paper entitled “Education for Meaning: Outline of a Comprehensive Educational Concept for a Glocal World". It relates to the first big question of the conference: What should be the purposes that guide our educational goals? It suggests an outline of a comprehensive educational concept as an answer to that question. The paper attempts to delineate an educational stance that goes all the way from basic philosophical and sociological assumptions to practices and organizational patterns in schools. It maintains that such comprehensive concepts in education are necessary for fruitful educational discourse.

The concept presented in the paper is an original one, influenced by many educational positions such as teaching for understanding, caring education, and education for autonomy. It still requires further theoretical and practical development and a presentation in the conference could serve as a great opportunity to accomplish it.
