Hurricane Irma blew past Miami as a Category 3 storm on September 10, 2017. The FIU campus was officially closed on September 8, 2017 and remained closed until September 12, 2017. Classes did not resume until September 18, 2017. During this time, FIU sheltered special needs evacuees from Monroe County and resident students.
