Abstract

The purpose of this study was to collect preliminary data from individuals in Hispanic communities by addressing their expectations and needs for the development of a stuttering support group designed for Spanish-speaking individuals who stutter and their families. A qualitative research design was used, and data were collected from demographic questionnaires and focus group sessions. A total of six Spanish-speaking Hispanics who stutter or have family members who stutter were recruited from the NSA. Four major themes emerged based on the participants’ responses which included: Characteristics of People who Stutter, Disclosing and Sharing Stuttering Experiences, Beliefs About Causes and Cures of Stuttering, and Designing a Spanish Stuttering Support Group. Findings suggest that the lack of support available to Spanish-speaking PWS in their language may directly correlate to their negative experiences associated with stuttering. Findings indicate the importance of developing and implementing support groups for these individuals, considering cultural differences.
