Abstract

The purpose of this study was to collect preliminary data from Hispanic, Spanish- speakers via focus groups about their expectations and needs in the development of a support group for Hispanic, Spanish-speaking PWS and their families. A mixed methods research paradigm was used to investigate the six participants’ attitudes towards stuttering and their perceptions of stuttering support groups via surveys and questionnaires before, during, and after attending at least one focus group. Pretest and post-test questionnaires showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the attitudes and perceptions of stuttering. For post-session surveys, comparison for each individual showed improvement after attendance of at least one focus group. Overall, participants of this study reported that their participation in the focus group was beneficial. This study showed how PWS and parents of CWS showed improvement in their perceptions and beliefs after attending at least one focus group.
