Abstract

This article is founded on theories that suggest the importance of nurturing thought and language to promote reading and writing. Through examples from action research experiences in classrooms, the author gives credit to scientific theories that support the importance of stimulating oral language as a basis for the development of written language. On the other hand, the close correlation between language and thought is emphasized to reflect on the importance of stimulating thinking to provoke in the child the need to make thinking visible through oral and written language. The article recommends to offer children a curriculum rich in experiences that allow them to develop their vocabulary and thus facilitate the understanding of texts. With classroom examples we can see how the implementation of Visible Thinking strategies (developed by researchers from Project Zero of Harvard University) stimulate thinking and make it visible. In this way children use language in a functional and meaningful way.
