A partnership, announced on 5 June between the US Southern Command (Southcom), the international NGO Global Fishing Watch (GFW) and various Latin American governments, seeks to prevent foreign fishing fleets from violating countries’ territorial waters. Ecuador has been particularly exposed to this problem, with last year’s incursion of a large Chinese fleet into the ecologically unique Galápagos area briefly giving the Andean country a leading role in global geopolitics
