A version of this presentation was voted (by participants) as the Best Presentation at the Global Education Benchmark Group Conference earlier this year. While that was presented as a PowerPoint, I would ensure that the same level of practicality and utility be present in a poster session. Ultimately, I want to share with other educators what has worked in my classroom and share with them how to acknowledge, confront, and mitigate the risks of teaching this material at a time when it can feel sensational, polarizing, or uncomfortable. This work is vital. I love what I do, and I am eager to share my materials with others. I have attached a PDF file of my presentation here so that you may see some of the curricular materials/pedagogical strategies included in the presentation. Should it be accepted, I am eager to reformat it as a poster for ICOT.
To engage students in global scholarship is a wonderful opportunity; it is also a responsibility that requires conscientiousness. How can we prepare students to thoughtfully engage in global scholarship when misinformation is rampant? How can we acknowledge our biases and avoid relying on them in any study of difference? How do we avoid reinforcing the dominant narrative in our courses? This poster session will consider these questions and offer curricular materials and pedagogical strategies to address them through a consideration of course preparation and desired outcomes. The poster session will include the following: Objectives: To share strategies for course preparation and desired outcomes through an analysis of artifacts. To collaborate and identify strategies for handling sensitive moments or situations in the classroom. Ultimately, to reaffirm the work that we do; to recognize the responsibility we share; to reinforce best practices in the classroom. Essential Questions: What are best practices for preparing a course on global scholarship? How can we specifically identify desired outcomes for a course on global citizenry? How do we mitigate the “risks” of engaging our students in material that can be sensitive?
