Abstract

Join a discussion about the experiences Out of Eden Learn’s online global learning community offers for learners of all ages. Explore Out of Eden Learn activities that encourage “slowing down” learning, listening carefully, observing and reflecting to give students opportunities to learn more about themselves, and others. Together we’ll share ideas on how to integrate Out of Eden Learn into subjects you currently teach and the arts. **The Out of Eden Learn project complements National Geographic Fellow and Pulitzer-Prize winning photojournalist Paul Salopek’s Out of Eden Walk.

GOAL OF COURSE & PRESENTATION: To engage participants in experiencing how Out of Eden Learn offers students opportunities to make global connections through shared activities that encourage "slow looking" and opportunities for their students to reflect on how their own lives connect to bigger human stories. Participants will be introduced to the Out of Eden Learn project which complements National Geographic Fellow and photojournalist Paul Salopek’s Out of Eden Walk through a short video narrated by Paul that explains the purpose of his walk. Emphasis will be on how this project offers students opportunities to make global connections through shared activities that encourage slow looking. An overview of the kinds of activities and experiences this project offers students will be given: “slowing down to observe the world carefully and listening attentively to others; exchanging stories and perspectives about people, place, and identity; and reflecting on how their own lives connect to bigger human stories”. Participants will watch a short Out of Eden Learn video that explains more about and how to use the Out of Eden Learn interactive online global platform. Also, participants will be able to experience first hand one of these activities (Footstep #3 - “Taking a Neighborhood Walk” where participants will go on a quick walk to take a slow look around our current conference location, and take two photos to share with our group.) Together we’ll explore and discuss Out of Eden Learn activities and student work to discover: How “slow” activities and social media may be harnessed to create powerful learning experiences for young people;” as well as considering how Out of Eden Learn materials and ideas could be integrated into the participants’ various subjects and the arts.
