Abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine the direct effects of salary earnings, educational attainment, community support, and resilience on the career success of Haitian professionals. The Yselande Pierre Career Success Measure (YPCSM) was administered to two hundred and fourteen (N = 214) respondents ages 18 and above from two national professional organizations that represent the career and educational advancement of the Haitian ancestry group. Structural Equation Modeling analysis was conducted in PLS-SEM; the latent variable mediation analysis revealed that the Haitian professionals’ salary earnings and community support had significant direct effects, while educational attainment and resilience were not significant predictors of career success. As for the mediating role of resilience in the community support to career success relationship, the study found that the relationship between the variables had no mediation effects. The results indicate that the hypotheses of the study were partially supported; however, this does not imply educational attainment and resilience are unimportant. Because the predictors of success are not a one-size-fits-all, the educational attainment and resilience constructs could be viewed in different and more complex ways. The empirical and practical implications on the career success of the Haitian Ancestry group are discussed.
