Abstract / Abstracto

Abstract

Writing can seem as natural as orality, easily acquired by any child in any culture. But this is not the case: writing is a recent technology in the history of mankind, restricted to a small set of languages, developed through formal instruction over a long time, and which until recently was the privilege of elites. Today, however, the knowledge society is traversed by all kinds of writings and to act you need, above all, to be an expert writer. In particular, academic writing is a complex mediated communication technology that intervenes in teaching and learning, communication and assessment processes in university settings. With the expansion of the higher education system in Latin America, the question of what writing to teach and how to do it has become urgent. For this reason, certain concepts such as alfabetización académica in Spanish America or letramentos acadêmicos in Brazil have been installed in the last 15 years. The different theoretical traditions and teaching proposals have focused on some functions of academic writing, but without offering an integrated vision more in line with its complexity. Writing has an epistemic function, creating and transforming disciplinary knowledge; a rhetorical function, communicating according to discursive patterns that are also disciplinary; an enabling role, evaluating performance and validating, or not, student trajectories; a critical function, favoring the agency and the students' own positioning; and an expressive function, building identities, linking with vernacular writings and proposing creative views on reality. These five functions establish complex relationships with each other, sometimes antagonistic, but any proposal for teaching academic writing in higher education must be able to take care of all of them.
